🧘 Hi Everyone, I hope you are all having a great week!
Here is a quick summary of what happened in my week and what I learned
Fun fact of the week
This week I did quite a bit of research into cooldowns and their actual purpose and I definitely learned a lot!
For me I never used to really cool down I would do a tough workout and could never be bothered to go do a slow jog or do stretching. All I wanted was to sit on the couch and watch TV or go have a nice warm shower. But I always felt bad doing this because I knew (thought) in my mind that I needed to do a cool down or else my body would be extremely sore the next day.
Here is a list of all of the things which I thought would help me if I cooled down
prevent muscle soreness
increase range of motion
prevent injury
increase my immune system
help stabilise core temperature
help to stabilise my breathing and help to control my breathing
I learned all of this through coaches and youtube videos online. However, I was extremely surprised when I was reading an academic article on cooling down whilst researching for a forum post for TTP (check it out here)
In summary (you can read more on the forum post) what this article said was that cooling down is basically useless 🤣 the only benefits of a cool down is:
It helps to remove lactate from the body
Improves our cardiovascular system (helps to recover breathing quicker after a workout)
Helps with a faster recovery of core temperature (reduces the amount we sweat post-workout)
That was a bit of a surprise to me as I thought there would be countless benefits to cooldowns however, I was being told that there weren’t. I am going to give it a go and test it out myself over the next couple of weeks and I will let you know how I go.
Interesting things to watch/read:
I just started watching Human playground on Netflix! The first episode was all about pushing the human pain barrier further than what has ever been pushed before.
This also perfectly leads to the book which I read this week. David Goggins's ‘Can’t hurt me’ this is a great read to prove to us what the human body is capable of.
That is it for this week!
hope you all have a great week
Thanks 🙏
